Ethics & Engagement across the Wellcome Trust Major Overseas Programmes

Busi Nkosi, GHBN Senior Fellow

Biosketch:

I am interested in the legal and ethical challenges when carrying out research among adolescents. The contradictory ethical and legal frameworks require context sensitive and adapted approaches that encourage adolescents’ participation in HIV prevention and clinical trials while also ensuring that their rights are respected. My work aims to address a need to develop unifying guidelines for research involving adolescents and, simultaneously, build the capacities of adolescents, parents and caregivers, and other research stakeholders in South Africa and beyond.

Current work:

My interest is in improving the ethical-legal guidelines that govern adolescents’ (18 years and below) participation in health research. I am particularly interested in issues around parental consent; adolescent assent and (adolescent) self-consent with a view to 1) develop consent models/approaches that respond/address legal and ethical dilemmas in adolescent research; 2) strengthen equitable and ethical conduct of adolescent research using social science theories and approaches to inform context sensitive tools. My career goal is to become an independent social science and bioethics researcher.
