Consent and assent in paediatric research - special considerations in low income settings

There has been some discussion in the literature and in the guidelines about the ethical issues arising in research with children, one of which relates to the challenges of involving children in the decision-making process – the consent and assent process. However little has been written about the unique challenges related to consent and assent in paediatric research in low-income settings where research is most needed and the disease burden is high. The concept of assent in the current guidelines is confusing, and researchers struggle to comply with them. There is an urgent need for the development of both clearer guidelines which can be adapted for all types or paediatric research wherever they are. I am looking into these guidelines in detail and would welcome any suggestions and strategies for good practice.
