Ethics & Engagement across the Wellcome Trust Major Overseas Programmes
The Tak Province Community Ethics Advisory Board (T-CAB) celebrated its 5th birthday on 18 January. Established 8 Jan 2009, T-CAB is made up of Karen border community members. Mainly facilitated by Drs.Khin Maung Lwin and Phaik Yeong Cheah, T-CAB is an important sounding board for MORU¹s Shoklo Medical Research Unit (SMRU}, which consults T-CAB on health and research projects on operational and ethical issues like informed consent and whether proposed studies respond to community needs. Currently, 13 volunteer members from areas surrounding SMRU clinics serve in T-CAB, which meets every 6-8 weeks.
The birthday celebration was held at the vocational restaurant run by the Hospitality and Catering Training Centre, a Mae Sot-based NGO that offers a hospitality training programme to Thai-Myanmar border area children. T-CAB members were served by the students undergoing training in the centre. As part of their studies to earn the Certificate of Hospitality and Tourism, students learn cooking, housekeeping, serving and all aspects of the hospitality industry.
